the 80s never die

Two of my friends recently celebrated their birthdays, and for their celebration they wanted to go to the Awesome 80’s Prom which is put on at Webster Hall. It’s an off-Broadway musical of sorts. Essentially like an interactive musical where you get to dance to fabulous music during the presentation and even cast a vote for the prom king and queen. We all came out dressed in our best 80s attire.

There was the Nerd, a Football Player (“Beef”), the Head of the Prom Committee, Captain of the Football Team, The Cheerleader, the Spaz, the Photographer, the Class President, the Drama Queen, the Asian Exchange Student, the Rebel, the Swedish Exchange Student, and the Dance Captain. The Asian Exchange Student, Feung Schwey, kept getting in the frame for all of my pictures. He was pretty funny though.
As I walked into the “auditorium”, I passed the Dance Captain, who was wearing a variation on my dress (less color - boring… snore… haha) and pulled me aside to sneer at me about my dress. They were totally in character. She told me I needed to do something with my hair. It was so straight… so boring!
We walked in, took some pics at the set up photo area (meeeeemories!), and then made our way in to the main dance floor. Shortly after we walked in, they started playing Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart. They had pulled up one of many bachelorettes up on the stage to sing. Except… she wasn’t singing? I don’t remember how it happened exactly, but somehow they pulled her off the stage (I feel like I remember them asking her jokingly if she was a mute) and I found myself getting pulled up there. Whaaat? I know most of the words… not all of the words… but it worked.

I love me some karaoke but being up on the stage singing in front of about a hundred people? That was a rush. Far beats my rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” back during sorority rush days. What an awesome experience. They gave me a t-shirt with the high school’s name on it and named me something like “Class Singer”. Haha. The guy who played the DJ onstage during the show caught up with me later on 14th Street to tell me again what a great job I did. I went home feeling pretty darn good!

The birthday girls seemed to have a blast too, which of course was the main point of the evening. This was such a fun spot for girl’s night out. Definitely recommend checking it out.
As I was walking home, some obnoxious guy leaned out the window of his car and screamed, “Hey! Halloween is overrrrrrr!!”. Jerk. And so dumb. Halloween might come and go each year, but the 80s? Yeah, the 80s never die. Crimp on!
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there’s only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart
